Abstract

Tropical forests can make a significant contribution to both mitigation and adaptation strategies of climate change. An effective climate change response requires consideration of the role and potential impacts on, biodiversity and ecosystem services.  Several studies indicate that there is a decline in species richness along with altitude and it has an influence on biomass and soil organic carbon. Thus, this study was conducted to evaluate the impact of Elevation on Woody species diversity and carbon stock potential in Kalla forest, Konso zone, Sothern Ethiopia.

Abstract

Nowadays carbon stock estimation has gained greater attention for environmental and economical (carbon market) perspectives. Forest plays an important role in climate change mitigation through sequestering and storing carbon from the atmosphere. Carbon stock estimation enables us to understand the current status of carbon stocks and to deduce its changes in the future.

Abstract

A study was conducted to investigate above-ground biomass and soil carbon stock of religious compounds in different age groups of Hawass city administration, Ethiopia.  First, take a list of religious compounds from Hawasa city administration 54 compounds were recorded, then by using age group of compounds as criteria for classifying into three age groups, ten religious compounds from different religious types were selected in stratified random sampling.

Abstract

A comparative assessment of carbon stocks of natural and plantation forests in Setema district, Jimma zone South West Ethiopia was conducted. Carbon (C) densities of the biomass and soil (0–40 cm) in the natural forest and plantations of Eucalyptus and C. lusitanica in the Setema forest were determined and compared. In the stratum or forest stand, sample plots of 20 m x 20 m,(square) were randomly laid to measure the biomass of woody plants, a total of 90 (30 in each stratum) sample plots were taken for C stock inventory.

Abstract

Forest biomass is estimated through direct and indirect methods. The indirect method is less costly and efficient. Biomass equation is one of the indirect methods to estimate biomass using certain parameters. However, very few biomass equations have been developed for limited tree species in Ethiopia and hence, generic biomass equations are usually used. This may under or overestimate the biomass. Besides, the accuracy of biomass estimate using the different methods was inadequately studied.
